What We Care About

Wildlife Habitat Assessment

Gristwood & Toms work in partnership with highly qualified and very experienced Environmental Consultants thereby ensuring a proactive approach to the protection and enhancement of all wildlife and their potential habitat, including all designated European Protected Species. At our company headquarters (an 18 acre site in Hertfordshire) we have invested significantly, harnessing expertise from many sources, to create a woodland planting scheme with many wildlife habitats, including a very successful, and expanding, apiary. This allows us to research wildlife behaviour in different tree species and conditions.

Extended Phase One Habitat Survey

This was commissioned by the company and took place at our Shenley headquarters in August 2009. The Survey was carried out for a variety of environmental reasons, not least to assess the general habitats on the land and to see whether the site has the potential to support protected species including great crested newts, reptiles, badgers and bats, as well as other species of conservation concern. The full report can be obtained from the company by request.

Recycling

Gristwood & Toms have a dedicated recycling facility at their head office in Shenley, Hertfordshire and another at their Birmingham site. The company is known for its corporate environmental and social responsibility, and currently recycles all wood waste, which is burnt in power stations to create carbon neutral electricity for the nation. This also avoids the need to dispose of the waste wood in landfill sites.

The Environment

It is the policy of Gristwood & Toms to implement and maintain an effective environmental management system that meets the requirements of ISO 14001:2004. We take seriously our responsibility for environmental stewardship and believe that as a leading arboricultural company we should play a constructive role in helping to address the challenges facing the environment.

Gristwood & Toms recognise that a healthy environment is essential for the good of society, people and our business. We feel that diverse, healthy natural resources (eg fresh water, oceans, air, forests, grasslands, etc.) are an important component of social and sustainable economic development. Consequently a vigorous and diverse tree population is vital to both water and air quality and to help regulate the climate. The wildlife habitat value of trees is immeasurable and irreplaceable, and a major challenge for today’s society is to manage human demands on land, soil and vegetation without adversely affecting the ecosystem.

We have defined our Environmental Policy to ensure it is appropriate to the nature, scale and environmental impacts of our activities, products and services.

We are Committed to:

  • Complying with all applicable legal requirements and with other requirements to which we subscribe that relate to environmental aspects.

  • Continual improvement and prevention of pollution.

  • Promoting environmental principles throughout the supply chain.

  • Maintaining open communication links within the company, its customers and the general public with regard to environmental issues concerning our operations.

  • Recycling all of our re-usable wood.

  • Ensuring efficient use of energy, water and other natural resources.

  • Operating our business in the most environmentally beneficial way.
